Installation, 2014
The computer has transformed itself from a tool to a seemingly independent, thinking companion. We personify the computer and keep finding new semantic metaphors to understand the complex algorithms behind it. The danger lies in attributing real cognitive intelligence to the computer and forgetting that it is only a metaphor.
Already in 1976 the so-called "heretic of computer science" Joseph Weizenbaum formulated this problem, which is taken up by the installation 'laterna obscura'.
The observer is first put in a searching position: while looking, the quotation disappears behind thermochromatic paint. Under the heat of the lantern the viewer has to realize that not all questions can be answered by computers.
